Located in the heart of The San Fernando Valley, Van Nuys Airport is one of the busiest municipal airports in the world. Van Nuys Airport (and subsequently Van Nuys car service) has a rich history in travel, feats of aviation, and celebrity traffic during its century in business. Originally called Los Angeles Municipal Airport, Van Nuys Airport opened in December 1928 just 25 years after the Wright Brothers embarked on the world’s first flight. In its early years of business, Van Nuys was home to record-breaking flights from world-famous pilots like Amelia Earheart and Florence “Pancho” Barnes. The airport became a common site used to film early movies in the 1940s, a practice which is still in place today.
Van Nuys Has Stood Through Wartime
In 1942, the airport was turned into a military base during the outbreak of World War II. The airport became an important defense manufacturing center throughout the duration of the war. Following the end of the war, the City of Los Angeles purchased the airport in 1949 for $1 as a war surplus and renamed it San Fernando Valley Airport.
Throughout the late 1940s, Hollywood continued to use the airport for filming. It was around this time that an employee named Norma Jeane Dougherty – better known today as Marilyn Monroe – was discovered by a film executive while working on an aircraft assembly line! After being photographed for an article about assembly line workers for a popular magazine, she was asked to do a test screening for a well-known movie studio, and the rest is history.
In the 1950s, the United States Air National Guard introduced jets and therefore brought growth to the aviation industry, allowing for further growth at airports around the country. In 1957, Van Nuys Airport received its final name change as residential growth boomed in The Valley and surrounding areas.
Moving Into Public Operations
Airport operations increased throughout the 1960s, with some of the biggest and most important innovations in aerospace engineering taking place at the airport. Around this time, Van Nuys opened its doors to the public, offering guided tours of the historical site that played such a major role in the history of both aviation and film, while still welcoming private jet charters and Van Nuys car service from the general public.
Many of the most popular films of the twentieth century were filmed in part at Van Nuys Airport, the most notable of which is 1942’s Casablanca. Many popular, contemporary music videos have also been filmed at the airport throughout the last few decades, including Britney Spears’s “Stronger,” Metallica’s “The Memory Remains,” Blink-182’s “All the Small Things,” and KISS’s “God Gave Rock and Roll To You 2.”
